Pain Injection

A procedure where medication is injected directly into a specific area of the body to relieve pain.

In Canada, pain injection is a medical procedure where medication is injected directly into a specific area of the body to relieve pain. It can include local anesthetics, corticosteroids, or nerve blocks, used to manage chronic pain, inflammatory conditions, and nerve pain. The goal is targeted pain relief and improved quality of life.

Fluoroscopic Pain Injection:

A fluoroscopic pain injection is a medical procedure that involves using fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray imaging) to guide the precise delivery of pain-relieving medication to a specific area of the body. This technique ensures accurate placement of the injection, targeting the source of pain, and is commonly used to treat conditions like back pain, joint pain, and nerve pain.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE:

For spine and/or hip injections:

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment.
  • You will require a driver. Please arrange for a person to drive you to your appointment and back.
  • Your appointment may take up to 2 hours.
  • Discontinuation of blood-thinners, anticoagulants, antiplatelet medication: Please remember to follow this instruction IF provided to you by your referring or consulting physician.
  • Please fast for 4 hours prior to your procedure. Medications (excluding blood thinners) may be taken in the morning with water.
  • If you have diabetes, you will need to remove any blood sugar sensors/transmitters/receivers or insulin pumps as these devices may be exposed to radiation.
  • Please bring a valid health card, any relevant WSIB Information (claim number, date of injury and site of injury) and all your medications with you on the day of your appointment.
  • During the booking of your appointment, you may have been instructed to pick-up your medication from the pharmacy on the day of your procedure. Please remember to do so if this was the instruction provided to you.

For all other injections:

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment.
  • Your appointment may take up to 2 hours.
  • During the booking of your appointment, you may have been instructed to pick-up your medication from the pharmacy, on the day of your procedure. Please remember to do so if this was the instruction provided to you.

DURING THE PROCEDURE:

During a fluoroscopic pain injection, you’ll lie on an X-ray table as the healthcare provider uses real-time X-ray imaging to guide a needle near the affected area. They’ll administer a local anesthetic to numb the site before injecting pain-relieving medication.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

After the procedure, you may rest in a recovery area before going home. Soreness at the injection site is normal and pain relief may take a few days to occur. Follow post-procedure instructions, monitor for side effects, and attend any follow-up appointments as advised by your healthcare provider.

I was very impressed with the pain injections process and and even my family doctor was impressed with the doctor that is looking after me here. After a full year and half I’m finally getting honest answers and results.
