Did you know patients ages 65+ can self-refer for AAA screenings?
Ontario Health has introduced a new self-referred ultrasound screening program for patients ages 65 and older to diagnosis and treat Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA).
Why Screen for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms?
AAA is a bulge in the abdominal aorta, which is the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the lower part of the body. If left untreated, it can silently grow and rupture without warning. If a rupture happens, it causes massive internal bleeding and is often fatal. Early detection and timely treatment can reduce the risk of emergency surgery or even sudden death.
Each year, 20,000 Canadians are diagnosed with an AAA. Some risk factors include family history, hypertension, smoking, and diet.
