DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Diet & Nutrition Consultation

Comprehensive diet and nutrition support by a specialist.

Nutrition is important for everyone, regardless of body size, weight or health status. A patient may see a diet and nutrition specialist to build an individualized approach and ongoing support for their nutrition and health-related needs. As well, these specialists can support people living with obesity who also have other chronic diseases, malnutrition, food insecurity or disordered patterns of eating.

Obesity is caused by complex factors, including the interaction of genetics, biological systems, and one’s environment. Obesity Canada recognizes obesity as a progressive chronic disease, similar to diabetes or high blood pressure, characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. In this way, diet and nutrition also play an important role in the prevention and management of cardiovascular health related issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke. Nutrition interventions for obesity management should focus on achieving health outcomes for chronic disease risk reduction and quality of life improvements, not just weight changes. It should emphasize individualized eating patterns, food quality and a healthy relationship with food.

Our team strives to develop change-based relationships with patients diagnosed with overweight or obesity by focusing on understanding the patient and the patient’s individual situation, uncovering the patient’s personal reasons for change, asking permission to provide recommendations and education based on individual needs, and empowering the patient throughout their health journey.

BEFORE THE TEST

The procedures of a diet and nutrition consultation may vary, but will typically include an interview, physical examination, other examinations as required, and a diagnosis of the patient’s condition. However, preparation for the consultation is also an important step. To maximize the benefits that this procedure can offer, patients are encouraged to:

  • Prepare a list of any medications being taken
  • Bring results of other medical exams and tests
  • Prepare a list of questions to ask the specialist
  • Create a list of behavioral patterns and symptoms related to your diet and nutrition

DURING THE TEST

During the first consultation, the specialist will take a detailed medical history and do a physical examination. You will be able to explain and discuss the details of your patterns and symptoms.

AFTER THE TEST

Once the specialist has collected all the necessary information, the patient will be informed of the diagnosis and treatment options, which can include:

  • Lifestyle changes, which may include those to your diet and physically activity.
  • Certain tests, such as blood tests
  • Medications
  • Scheduled follow-up visits
